Mary Alsop King was born into the reputable New York household of John Alsop, a merchant of standing, and his wife, Mary Frogat. Noted for both her beauty and an unspoiled disposition, she was wed at sixteen to Rufus King, son of Richard King and Isabella Bragdon, thereby joining one of the rising families of the early Republic.
