Col John Rodgers
Scottish
Colonel John Rodgers stands at the head of the American Rodgers naval line, a Scottish immigrant whose Maryland homestead and roadside tavern at Perryville became a familiar stop for travelers including George Washington, Martha Washington and the Marquis de Lafayette. Rising as a local militia officer during the Revolutionary era, Rodgers established the family's early prominence, but his greatest legacy is the naval dynasty that followed: beginning with his son, Commodore John Rodgers, whose leadership and pre-War of 1812 heroics helped shape the emerging United States Navy. Today, Rodgers Tavern remains the most tangible link to the family's origins, preserved as a historic site along the old post road. - AsNotedIn
