William Paterson was a notable Scottish banker, trader and financial innovator best known as a co-founder of the Bank of England. He was also the chief promoter of the ill-fated Darien scheme, an ambitious attempt to establish a Scottish trading colony called New Caledonia on the Isthmus of Panama in the late 1690s.
