Marian Hooper Adams, known as "Clover," was a prominent photographer and celebrated Washington, DC, hostess whose artistic eye and social presence placed her at the center of late-nineteenth-century intellectual life. The youngest child of Robert William Hooper and Ellen Sturgis Hooper, she married historian Henry Brooks Adams in 1872 and became part of the influential Adams circle. Though admired for her wit, hospitality, and photographic skill, she struggled with clinical depression, a condition that ultimately led to her death by suicide in 1885.
