Standard Oil's Renaissance Skyscraper

The Standard Oil Building on Broadway rises beside Bowling Green in New York City's Lower Manhattan, a 31-story Renaissance Revival skyscraper long associated with the Standard Oil Company and its successor firms. The original headquarters structure was erected in 1884-1885 on the former site of Alexander Hamilton's house, then expanded repeatedly — first in 1895 and again in a major 1921-1928 campaign led by architect Thomas Hastings of Carrere and Hastings with Shreve, Lamb & Blake. The enlarged building occupies a pentagonal block and features a curved Broadway facade, deep light courts, and a tower crowned by a stepped pyramid whose finial once held a kerosene-lit cauldron symbolizing the company's origins. Inside, a grand marble lobby leads to banks of elevators serving both the base and tower floors, including executive suites and the Socony boardroom on the 21st story. Designated a New York City Landmark in 1995 and a contributing property to the Wall Street Historic District in 2007, 26 Broadway remains one of the defining corporate monuments of the Financial District. - AsNotedIn
