The Department of Montevideo is a first-level administrative division of Uruguay and is home to the country's national capital, Montevideo. The region is located in southern Uruguay, along the northern coast of the Rio de la Plata. It is bordered by the department of Canelones to the north and east, while its southern boundary is formed by the Rio de la Plata estuary. The department is the smallest in Uruguay by area but the most densely populated.
