The Portal of Salamanca University is a masterpiece of late 15th–century Plateresque architecture and the most famous decorative element of the University of Salamanca. Carved entirely from golden Villamayor sandstone, the facade is divided into three horizontal tiers overflowing with intricate symbolic figures, including medallions of the Catholic Monarchs and representations of Roman emperors. It is most widely celebrated for the hidden stone frog perched atop a skull, which has become a legendary challenge for students and tourists to locate in the city's Old Quarter.
