Complete Victorian Church Interior by Clayton and Bell

The Church of St John the Baptist, Keele, is a mid-nineteenth-century parish church rebuilt between 1868 and 1870 by J Lewis of Newcastle-under-Lyme. Its Decorated-style exterior—pink sandstone, a tall spire, and lean-to aisles—frames an interior noted for its completeness and High Victorian character. Arch-braced roofs, iron chancel screen, and a suite of monuments from the sixteenth to eighteenth centuries contribute to its historic fabric, but the church is most distinguished by its interior design and stained-glass program by Clayton and Bell, whose work lends the interior the piety, colour and Gothic Revival sentiment praised in the English National Heritage listing. - AsNotedIn
