Boxford is a village and civil parish in Berkshire, England, situated on the east bank of the River Lambourn about four miles northwest of Newbury. The parish preserves hidden traces of its Roman past. The Ermin Way, the Roman road linking Corinium Dobunnorum (Cirencester) and Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester), crosses the southern part of the parish, and a 140-yard section was identified near William's Copse through aerial archaeology. It is not marked for visitors. A large fourth-century Roman villa mosaic was discovered in 2017, examined by archaeologists, and recovered. Along the main road commonly referred to as Boxford road stands an old mill on the River Lambourn, several thatched cottages, and the parish church of St Andrew, where a functioning Anglo-Saxon window is visible on the exterior of the north chancel wall; the church's pulpit dates from 1618. North of the village, the same road passes under the modern M4 into farmland used in March 1944 for a major practice D-Day parachute drop by the US 101st and 82nd Airborne Divisions. Known as "The Big Drop," the exercise involved roughly 3,000 men and equipment and was witnessed by Winston Churchill and Dwight D Eisenhower. - AsNotedIn
