1797/00/00 Named after the Revolutionary War hero Charles C Pinckney, construction begins on Fort Pinckney. Built of log and earthen fort, it was intended to protect the city from a possible naval attack when war with France seemed imminent.
1804/09/00 Completed in 1804, Fort Pinckney is virtually destroyed by a severe hurricane in September of that year.
1810/00/00 Located on Shutes Folly, the brick-and-mortar Castle Pinckney is erected in 1809-1810 and is garrisoned throughout the War of 1812.
1832/11/00 John W Farley Artillery Commander President Jackson orders Battery B, 1st US Artillery, to repair Castle Pinckney and to standby to fire on Charleston. The island is strategically vital because its guns directly commanded the city and its wharves. Nullification Crisis
1860/12/27 Maj Richard Kidder Meade Jr US Army Commander CO Meade declines Confederate Gen James J Pettigrew's offer of parole and moves his garrison to Fort Sumter. Beginning of the American Civil War
