Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks comprise eight monumental Hopewell earthwork complexes built between about 100 BCE and 400 CE across southern Ohio. Created for ceremony, gathering and astronomical observation, the sites represent some of the largest and most sophisticated prehistoric earthen constructions in North America. The serial World Heritage property includes the Newark Earthworks, Fort Ancient Earthworks, and five earthwork complexes within Hopewell Culture National Historical Park. In 2023, UNESCO inscribed Hopewell Ceremonial Earthworks on the World Heritage List in recognition of their exceptional testimony to Indigenous engineering, planning, and ceremonial traditions. - AsNotedIn
