Kirkbride System

The Kirkbride System is a set of standards for humane treatment of mentally ill patients adopted in 1851 by the Association of Medical Superintendents. Developed by Thomas Story Kirkbride when he was superintendent and physician-in-chief of the Philadelphia Hospital for the Insane, the plan calls for hospital buildings to be tastefully ornamented and designed to increase the individual treatment for patients and operational effectiveness for staff. - AsNotedIn
