William Vanderhorst

  • Province of South Carolina

William Vanderhorst was a colonial South Carolina planter, militia captain, and legislator. A son of John Vanderhorst and his wife Margaret, he represented Christ Church Parish in the Commons House of Assembly from 1760 to 1761 and held a captaincy in the local militia. Around 1750 he married Margaret McNabney, daughter of James McNabney and stepdaughter of Dr William Cleiland, and they had three children — John, James, and Sabina. Vanderhorst's 1766 will, proved in June 1767, divided his estates between his sons, leaving his St Bartholomew Parish plantation to John and his Christ Church Parish plantation to James. His estate inventory, recorded in July 1767, listed thirty-seven enslaved people. - AsNotedIn
