Martha Dandridge Aylett Duncan was born into the prominent Virginia Aylett-Henry family, the daughter of Colonel Philip Aylett and Elizabeth Henry Aylett, and a granddaughter of the patriot Patrick Henry. Raised within a lineage deeply tied to early American political and military history, she later married Master Commandant Silas Duncan of the United States Navy.
