Seth Pope
- Also Known As: Seth the Trader
Plymouth Colony
Seth Pope was a prominent Dartmouth merchant and civic leader whose career spanned the late Plymouth Colony and early Province of Massachusetts Bay. Born in Plymouth, he settled near Acushnet after being ordered out of Sandwich as a young peddler — a slight he later answered by purchasing major properties in the town. Through industry and shrewd coastal trading, he became one of the region's wealthiest citizens, owning mills, warehouses, wharves and multiple sloops engaged in commerce. Pope served Dartmouth as selectman, militia lieutenant, representative to the Plymouth General Court, magistrate for Bristol County, and Justice of the Peace. His property rights in Old Dartmouth were confirmed in the 1694 Bradford quitclaim, reflecting his role among the town's principal proprietors. At his death in 1727, he left extensive estates and a large family whose descendants included figures such as Franklin D Roosevelt and Douglas MacArthur. - AsNotedIn
