Ayres Phillips Merrill
American
Ayres Phillips Merrill was a Mississippi-born member of a well-established American gentry family, educated, cosmopolitan, and active in both plantation and diplomatic spheres. Born in Natchez, he was the son of Ayres Phillips Merrill and Jane Sarah Moore, part of a lineage that traced back through New England and Connecticut families of the eighteenth century. A graduate of Harvard University, Merrill returned to Natchez as a cotton planter, a role typical of the region's elite. His marriage to Jane Surget linked him to another prominent Mississippi family, strengthening the social and economic networks that defined the planter class. Merrill's career extended beyond agriculture: President Ulysses S Grant appointed him US Minister to Belgium, reflecting his standing, education, and diplomatic capability. He served in this post until his death in 1883, and he is buried in Natchez City Cemetery. He was the father of several children, including Dunbar Surget Merrill, whose own son — Aaron Stanton "Tip" Merrill — would become a distinguished US Navy Vice Admiral noted for his World War II. - AsNotedIn
