Audie Murphy

  • American

Audie Murphy was an American soldier, actor, and author whose wartime service made him one of the most decorated US combat veterans of the Second World War. Born into a large family of sharecroppers in rural Texas, he enlisted after the attack on Pearl Harbor and distinguished himself in campaigns across Italy and France, earning the Medal of Honor for his defense at the Colmar Pocket in January 1945. After the war Murphy became a prominent Hollywood figure, appearing in more than forty films, including To Hell and Back, adapted from his own memoir. His later years included advocacy for veterans' mental-health issues and continued work in film and writing. Murphy died in a plane crash in 1971 and is buried with honors at Arlington National Cemetery. - AsNotedIn
