Dunbar Surget Merrill
American
Dunbar Surget Merrill, son of Hon Ayres Phillips Merrill, belonged to the old American gentry families of Natchez and carried the manner expected of that world: a polished, courtly gentleman with an easy social presence and a wide circle of friends. Known as an engaging conversationalist and generous host, he moved comfortably within the refined civic and social networks of the lower Mississippi Valley. He is also the father of Aaron Stanton "Tip" Merrill, a US Navy Vice Admiral whose World War II service in the Pacific made him one of the Navy's standout cruiser commanders. - AsNotedIn
