Mary Tunaley Boott Lee

  • English

According to family lore, Miss Mary Tunaley was a favorite subject of the notable English painter Joseph Wright of Derby, who lived near her family in the early 1790s. She eventually immigrated to Boston with her husband, Francis Boott, a partner in the firm Boott & Farrow and cousin to Kirk Boott, a notable figure in the establishment of the Lowell textile mills. Derby's portrait of Mary is in the collection of Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, an institution whose landmark 1909 building was designed by her great-grandson, Guy Lowell. - AsNotedIn
