Dudley Saltonstall
American
Dudley Saltonstall was a New London-born naval officer and privateer whose Revolutionary War career ranged from early militia service to command of several Continental Navy frigates. Commissioned among the Navy's first captains, he led the ALFRED, TRUMBULL and WARREN before serving as commodore of the 1779 Penobscot Expedition, a disastrous operation that resulted in the loss of the entire American fleet and his subsequent dismissal. He continued the Patriot cause as captain of the privateer MINERVA, whose capture of the richly laden British merchantman HANNAH in 1781 helped provoke the British raid that burned New London. A member of the prominent Saltonstall-Winthrop lineage, he later engaged in West Indies trade and died there in 1796, his burial site unknown. - AsNotedIn
