A Smooth Manhattan

The Vieux Carre is an after-dinner cocktail from New Orleans, reportedly created by Walter Bergeron, head bartender at the Hotel Monteleone's Carousel Bar. Named for the "Old Square," the historic French Quarter, the drink is conceived as a tribute to the neighborhood's diverse communities: rye whiskey for Americans, cognac and Benedictine for the French, sweet vermouth for Italians, and Peychaud's and Angostura bitters for the Caribbean. Smooth and spirit?forward, it resembles a Manhattan in character. Although often dated to 1938, the cocktail appears earlier in Stanley Clisby Arthur's Famous New Orleans Drinks and How to Mix 'Em, underscoring its place in the city's long cocktail tradition. - AsNotedIn
